NCC: Competition, National Broadband Plan, critical for proper pricing

Success Damian Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), the nations’ telecommunications regulator, has stated that the Commission’s mandate of creating an enabling environment, promoting fair competition in the telecoms industry and the strategic objectives of the National Broadband Plan, are reasons to develop a proper pricing structure for broadband in Nigeria. The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umaru Garba Danbatta disclosed this at the Stakeholders’ Forum on the Study for the Determination of Cost Based Pricing for Retail Broadband and Data Services in Nigeria which was held at Digital Bridge Institute, Lagos State on Tuesday. Justice Ibrahim Buba nullifies EMTS board

  Success Nnaji Federal High Court in Lagos under the authority of Justice Ibrahim Buba has nullified the appointment of an interim board for Emerging Markets Telecommunications Service (EMTS), owners of 9mobile in Nigeria. He Give his ruling on recently in an application by a firm, Spectrum Wireless Communication Ltd, which claimed it invested $35 million in EMTS/Etisalat in 2009. United Capital, the umbrella body of all the 13 banks being owed $1.2 billion by 9mobile, is expected to file an appeal against the court’s verdict, The ruling may have put the ongoing sale process of 9mobile to preferred bidder or investor in shambles as one of the investors, Spectrum Wireless (SW), has now issued a “buyers beware” notice to potential investors. Spectrum Wireless is one of the non-bank investors of EMTS when the latter started operations in Nigeria in 2009 and put a $35 million investment in the then Etisalat.

Extraclass.ng wins N1m Taiwo Bankole Ogunyemi Prize

Success Damian Extraclass.ng, recently won the star prize of N1 million dubbed Taiwo Bankole Ogunyemi Prize at the Techtiary Forum 2017. The Forum was organised by Paradigm Initiative, a social enterprise, which connects youths with ICT-enabled opportunities. The Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative (PIN) Gbenga Sesan, while presenting the N1 million cheque (mock) to the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Extraclass.ng, Onyinyechi Nmecha, commended the innovative platform and advised the team to work more assiduously in order to make good use presented by the prize money. UNN students carry out ‘alternative energy grid project'

Success Damian Five students of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) have delved into ‘alternative energy grid’ project. The students are Nwangele Godwin Chukwuemeka; Okereke Kingsley; Esumeh Aaron; Udeh Isaac Nnaemeka; and Ogechukwu Uchechukwu Emmanuel Having completed 38 projects, the co-founders, now seek more funding to expand their venture. They maintained that they are shopping for about N100million funding to expand the project they started with N45,000 but is now valued at several millions. Uchechukwu Ogechukwu who spoke on behalf of the team, said, “We started with N45,000 and kept adding N5,000 each until we got things set. As I said early, it was like seven months.
